There are some songs in the world that have the ability to drive a person mad because they are so over played. It could be your favorite song by your favorite band but after working in a bar for years or listening to the radio a lot you get really tired of hearing them all the damn time.
Until you go to a different, non English speaking country. A sing along in a dive Mexican bar where you're probably the only American of a song that you don't expect anyone to know can be a spiritual thing.
Last night Pepe and I went out with one of his friends to a bar called la casa de los perros. It was exactly what you would expect it to be. Dark, stone walls, cash only, people salsa dancing in the corner... to techno type music (I dunno).

We had one beer there and smoked a bunch of cigarettes. They have people here who walk around to different places and sometimes just in the street, they're like the old school cigar girls that used to work at gentlemen clubs. Here they sell gum, suckers, tic-tacs, and single cigarettes. If you only want one you can just buy a cigarette. Its brilliant really. Especially to be in a bar. And they will even light your cigarette for you. It's like a whole different world down here. The bartender lit Pepe's cigarette at one point.
Anyway, after our one beer we left and Pepe's friend had to go do something so we decided to wait for him in the bar next door to casa de los perros. It was much busier and it was also what you would expect but with more neon lights and art drawn on the walls.
About 10 minutes into our being there suddenly the song Piano Man by Billy Joel started playing. I love the song personally and apparently I wasn't alone. The next thing I knew the chorus had started and like half the bar was singing along. Amazing!
Now I'm pretty sure I was the only American in the place and most likely the only native English speaker. Sometimes I forget that I'm not on another planet or in another world. I'm just south but I guess I never think of how music transcends everything. Race, culture, religion, sexual orientation... whatever. A classic song is a classic song no matter where you are.
I felt instantly like I was part of something bigger. Its like the scene in the movie Beautiful Girls where everyone is singing Sweet Caroline.
I recommend to everyone at some point in life be a part of a sing along. Sway your hips, bob your head, and belt it out with everyone else... you're instantly connected to the universe in a much more philosophical way and its a wonderful feeling.
After the sing along I saw a man whose face looked like a mask and he was real creepy. It was like the joker, or some sort of jester smile. He was super pale though so maybe a vampire? I'm not sure but he was creepy. I was too scared to take a picture.
